What needs to be done when a relative has died?

The funeral home you trust is the first point of contact for organizing and carrying out the funeral.

Among other things, the type of funeral (burial or cremation) is specified in the funeral order. The funeral home will make the necessary arrangements for the design and organization of the farewell/funeral service (e.g. the eulogy and choice of music) and for the use of the funeral hall.
The person responsible for the funeral can then select the burial site at the cemetery administration. When making this decision, the cemetery, the type of grave (elective or row grave, urn community), the size of the grave, the location and the given design regulations (specifications regarding the grave monument and the possibility of a border) must be taken into consideration. If a grave already exists and burials are still possible there, the person responsible for the burial must bring a power of attorney with them, unless they are the holder of the right to use the grave.

What costs will I incur?

The cemetery charges fees in accordance with the fee statutes, depending on the services provided.

  • You will receive a separate invoice for cremation.
  • For a burial
    • in a 1 m² urn grave is approx. 1,650.00 EUR;
    • in the urn communal area with name plaque approx. 1,700.00 EUR and
    • approx. EUR 2,500.00 for a single burial grave.
In addition to the cemetery fees, the costs for the funeral home's expenses, the organization of the funeral service and the creation of the gravestone must also be taken into account.

Advice and information

The cemetery administration can provide you with information on the possible uses of an existing grave and advice on the design options for the gravestone and suitable planting of the grave.

You can talk to us about the expected costs of burial or about the different types of graves in the municipal cemeteries.
We are also happy to provide information about the location of an existing grave.

How long can a grave be used?

Gravesites that existed before the cemetery statutes of 25.05.1994 came into force can be used for 30 years (urn graves) or 50 years (elective graves). Rights of use for graves acquired in accordance with the 1994 cemetery statutes can be used until all permitted burials have taken place. Payment of the necessary fees is of course a prerequisite.

What do I have to do if the gravesite is closed?

As the rightful user, you are responsible for clearing the grave monument including the foundation (by the stonemason or cemetery) and for removing the grave planting. In the case of urn graves, the cemetery will check the grave for any urn remains, which will be buried in a specially designated area for eternal rest.
