Project:

KSI: Expansion of the sidewalk into a combined bike/sidewalk path on Kahlaische Str., between Alexander-Puschkin-Platz and “An der Brauerei”

Project duration: September1 , 2024 – August 31, 2026

Partners involved: City of Jena (grant recipient and contracting authority), Ingenieurgesellschaft GIRWERT & PARTNER mbH (planning firm), SPIE Versorgungstechnik GmbH (construction contractor)

Grant reference number: 67K26628

Objectives and Scope: The planned project will complete a loop in the City of Jena’s existing bicycle path network. The existing sidewalk will be expanded into a 3-meter-wide shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians. The project will help upgrade a bicycle route—previously designated only as a secondary route—to fulfill its intended function and serve as an important feeder route from the main thoroughfares in the Saale Valley toward the city center and Westbahnhof. Following the comprehensive upgrade, the route will be designated as a primary route.

The project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better connect the increased volume of bicycle traffic traveling to and from the city center with the city’s bicycle path network. Furthermore, by diverting bicycle traffic away from the roadway, the project will bypass the accident-prone area at the Alexander-Puschkin-Platz roundabout.

Through the National Climate Protection Initiative, the federal government has been initiating and funding numerous projects since 2008 that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: from the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment-based support measures. This diversity ensures a wealth of good ideas. The National Climate Protection Initiative helps embed climate protection at the local level. Consumers, businesses, municipalities, and educational institutions all benefit from it.

Project:

KSI: Construction of a new bike path and sidewalk from Camburger Straße to the OBI Tunnel

Project Duration: June 1, 2026, through May 31, 2028

Partners involved: City of Jena (grant recipient and contracting authority), Stadtwerke Jena Netze GmbH, Ingenieurbüro Katzung GmbH (planning consultant), Landschaftsbau Erfurt Simonsen GmbH & Co. KG (construction contractor)

Grant ID: 67K33196

Objectives and Scope: Given the route’s great importance for pedestrians and cyclists—particularly as a school route from Jena North to Jena East—the construction project will create a more convenient connection between the B88, Camburger Straße, and the “OBI Tunnel.” The goal of this comprehensive upgrade is to renovate the traffic infrastructure and optimize the width to 3.50 m, plus a shoulder on both sides. The connection to the B88 and Camburger Straße will be established via a realignment at the existing traffic-light-controlled crosswalk. This will improve the route between the eastern and western parts of the city, enhance safety for students traveling to school, and contribute to increased traffic safety.

The project helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better accommodate the increased volume of bicycle traffic within the city’s bicycle path network.
