Here you can find information about the various burial plots.
The municipal cemeteries are available to anyone who has died in Jena and, if there is a legitimate interest, to those who have died outside the city as well.
The Nordfriedhof, as the main cemetery, offers the full range of 15 different types of burial plots.
The smaller cemeteries in the city’s districts have a limited selection of burial plots; some district cemeteries are reserved for residents of those districts.
A distinction is made between burial and cremation.
Urn burials are permitted in all cemeteries; burial, on the other hand, is sometimes restricted due to unfavorable (hydrogeological) soil conditions.

| Selected Grave Plots |
Selected burial plots are available in various sizes for in-ground burials as well as for urn burials. The number of possible burials depends on the size of the plot. Urns may also be interred in burial plots. The right of use may be renewed multiple times. A final renewal of the right of use for five years may take place after the resting period for the last possible burial has expired. |

| Urn niches |
Urns are interred above ground in urn niches within the columbarium. The name and dates of birth and death are inscribed on the cover plate. Two urns can be interred in a single urn niche. Grave maintenance is neither necessary nor possible. For more information on urn interments, please refer to the flyer “Burial Options at the Nordfriedhof.” |

| Maintained Graves |
Maintenance graves are designated urn burial plots for two urn burials; they are planted with groundcover plants and maintained by staff of the Municipal Cemeteries. Please discuss your options for grave marker design with the cemetery administration. Relatives are under no obligation to maintain the grave. Vases with cut flowers may, of course, be placed at the gravesite. |

| Tree Burial Plots |
At the North Cemetery, there is the option of a nature-oriented burial of urns. You can choose between communal trees or individual trees for four urns. If a decorative urn is used, it must be made of wood or felt. Eight tree burial sites, each accommodating two urns, are arranged in a circle around newly planted trees. Here, small grave markers may be placed, and relatives may plant flowers at the burial site. |

| Communal Urn Plots |
Shared urn plots are available exclusively at the North Cemetery. In the communal urn plot with a name plaque, a bronze plaque bears the names and dates of birth and death of the 50 people interred there. It may take three to four months to install the plaque, as it is cast in a single piece. In the case of communal urn burials without a name plaque, there is no name identification for the burial. For both types of communal urn burial sites, the burial procedure is Of course, a separate, individual memorial service is possible beforehand. The communal urn burial site is maintained by the staff of the Jena Municipal Cemeteries. Relatives may place cut flowers at the site. Please do not enter the burial area. |

| Islamic Burial Section |
A separate burial section at the North Cemetery is designated for the deceased of the Muslim faith. Burials there are conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions. The graves are oriented so that the deceased are buried facing Mecca. Special customs include ritual washing, the funeral prayer held outdoors, and burial without a coffin, if this has been permitted as an exception. A prerequisite for burial in this section is the approval of a local Islamic association. |

The municipal cemeteries offer a wide range of options for burial, grave types, locations, and grave site design.
An alternative to the communal urn burial is the landscaped Eschenplatz/maintained grave at the North Cemetery. A headstone bearing the names and dates of birth and death of up to two deceased individuals marks the burial site.
Of course, burial plots of various locations and sizes are also available.
The staff at the cemetery administration office are happy to provide expert guidance regarding any questions you may have and to assist you in making your selection.
Cemeteries and their burial plots are subject to various design regulations (Appendix 3 of the Cemetery Bylaws). In burial plots with specific design regulations, the size of the headstone and, in some cases, the type of stone are specified. In burial plots with general design regulations, there are no strict size requirements for the headstone, and the installation of grave borders is also permitted.
