The new after-work lecture series "Waldgeflüster" (Forest Whispers) in Jena has been very well received. Since January, the Jena City Forestry Office (KSJ) and the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald Thüringen (SDW) have been inviting people once a month to gain exciting insights into current topics relating to forests, nature and sustainability.
The first two events have already met with great interest. To kick things off, city forester Olaf Schubert took visitors on a journey through the history of Jena's city forest: from post-glacial forest development to the current state of the forest. In February, forestry office manager Bernhard Zeiss focused on modern hunting and its importance for sustainable forest management. Both evenings were very well attended with 50 to 80 guests each. The subsequent discussion rounds provided space for questions, exchanges and different perspectives.
The "Waldgeflüster" lecture series sees itself as a platform for information and dialog. On the last Thursday of every month, different speakers present current topics from the fields of forest ecology, nature and sustainable development from 18:30 to 20:00. The venue is the forum natura nature experience center in Jena.
The next event will take place on March 26, 2026. Under the title "Ways to more diversity in gardens - insights into the gARTENreich project", Esther Felgentreff from Friedrich Schiller University Jena will present research findings and practical approaches to promoting biodiversity in urban areas. The focus is on the question of how gardens can be ecologically enhanced as habitats and at the same time designed to be user-friendly.
All interested parties are cordially invited to attend. Please register at waldgefluester@sdw-thueringen.de. Admission is free.
