Frisches Wasser für alle

With the addition of four new locations, the network of public drinking fountains in the city of Jena has grown to a total of eleven. This further expands the free supply of drinking water in public spaces. “With the new drinking fountains, we are expanding the public infrastructure with a service that offers real added value in the daily lives of many people,” said KSJ Plant Manager Uwe Feige.

New Locations in the City

This year, new drinking fountains are being installed on the Wenigenjenaer Ufer, at the Kritzegraben, on Merseburger Straße, and as part of the “Beim Mönchenberge” construction project. The goal is to provide additional opportunities for refreshment, especially during the summer months.

Existing network to be expanded

Drinking fountains are already in operation at several central locations throughout the city, including at the Winzerla water axis, Karl-Marx-Allee in Lobeda, the Phyletisches Museum, Engelplatz, the market square, Nonnenplan (Holzmarkt), and the green space on Löbstedter Straße. With the new locations, the total number of public drinking fountains will increase to eleven.

Contribution to public health and climate adaptation

Especially against the backdrop of increasing heat stress, drinking fountains make an important contribution to climate-adapted urban development.

Quality and hygiene assured

The drinking fountains provide high-quality water at all times. Regular maintenance and continuous hygiene checks ensure their proper operation. Automatic flushing cycles also guarantee the freshness of the water. Even fountains that run briefly without being used are included in these technical flushing processes.

Winter shutdown to protect against frost

To protect against frost, the drinking fountains are generally taken out of service from October to May.

Outlook

Additional locations are being evaluated as part of future planning and construction projects. Concrete decisions on this matter are still pending.
