The SaaleHorizontale was officially named "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2023" by the hiking magazine on August 15, 2023.
The SaaleHorizontale not only inspires nature and adventure lovers.
Olaf Schubert, Head of Department at Kommunalservice Jena, describes the hiking trail through the middle Saale valley as follows: "This impressive hiking experience attracts nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts and adventurers alike and promises unforgettable impressions along one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the country."
The SaaleHorizontale stretches over 90 kilometers around Jena and leads through a diverse landscape of partly dense, natural deciduous forests and picturesque villages along the Saale. The hiking trail offers a variety of impressive viewpoints and idyllic meadow landscapes. Hikers have the opportunity to experience nature and at the same time gain an insight into the cultural history of the region.
Olaf Schubert continues: "This trail is not only a place for active recreation, but also an opportunity to get to know the beauty and diversity of our local nature. After hiking, you can also explore the city of Jena with its numerous shopping opportunities and end the evening with a relaxed evening meal."
The SaaleHorizontale is divided into 9 stages with different levels of difficulty, so that both experienced hikers and families with children can enjoy the routes. All entrances and exits are accessible by public transport. There are also numerous rest areas along the trail, as well as gastronomic offerings with regional specialties. The award as Germany's most beautiful hiking trail underlines the importance of nature tourism and sustainable travel in Jena.
