Kommunalservice Jena supports the European Week for Waste Prevention
According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, an average of 880,000 tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment has been collected separately over the last ten years. At the same time, it is estimated that up to five kilograms of electronic waste per person is stored in German households - unused in drawers, boxes or cupboards. Whether old printers, broken laptops or smartphones with weak batteries: many of these devices could be professionally repaired and reused or, in the event of a defect, properly disposed of and recycled so that valuable raw materials remain in the cycle. Unfortunately, they often mistakenly end up in residual or packaging waste - and are thus lost for good.
Local alternatives in Jena
In Jena in particular, there are many ways to sensibly avoid electronic waste and give devices a second life:
- Defective appliances can often be repaired with little effort through local repair initiatives.
- For appliances that are no longer usable, the city offers a local disposal option via 150 recycling islands with gray depot containers.
- In addition, old electrical appliances can be handed in at the recycling centers in Jena or at retail outlets - free of charge and professionally.
This means that electronic waste does not go to waste, but is returned to the resource cycle.
European Waste Prevention Week 2025
The European Week for Waste Prevention (EWAV) will take place this year from November 22 to 30, 2025 under the motto: "Repair instead of throw away: Avoid electronic waste!"
As Europe's largest communication campaign on waste prevention, it calls on people to conserve resources and extend the life cycle of products. Thousands of stakeholders from business, administration, education and civil society are taking part across Europe with creative campaigns and projects. Kommunalservice Jena is also actively involved in the campaign week as a partner and multiplier and provides information on sustainable ways to avoid waste in everyday life.
"Waste prevention starts in everyday life. Anyone who has electrical appliances repaired or disposes of them correctly not only protects the environment, but also conserves valuable resources. The European Waste Prevention Week shows how easy it is for everyone to act sustainably - and that we can achieve a lot together," says Uwe Feige, Vice President of the German Association of Local Utilities (VKU) and Plant Manager of Kommunalservice Jena.
