To mark the International Day of Forests, the forum natura nature experience center of the Jena City Forestry Office (KSJ) invites you to a special themed hike on Saturday, 21 March 2026. Under the title "Of emperors, farmers and giants", the tour leads along the Ottonian path up to the Fuchsturm on Jena's local mountain.
Along the way, participants will learn exciting facts about the history and use of the mountain. In addition to legends from ancient times, they will also learn about its agricultural importance, such as viticulture in the Middle Ages. The hike also provides insights into medieval village life, takes you past St. Mary's Church in Ziegenhain and explains how the village of Ziegenhain got its name. At several viewpoints, you can also see how much man has changed the landscape over the past 1000 years or so through clearing, agriculture and reforestation.
Let us take you on an exciting journey through the history and nature of the local mountain.
