In the period from summer 2024 to December 2025, the existing 4-arm junction Brückenstraße/Wiesenstraße was expanded. The expansion was carried out on the existing routes with widening for the planned junction geometry with facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition to the construction of the actual traffic circle, the project also included the street lighting system and the local transport stops as well as the tree felling and compensation measures.

Following a public invitation to tender in accordance with VOB/A, Naumburger Bauunion was commissioned with the execution of this joint project between Stadtwerke Jena Netze GmbH and the City of Jena, represented by KSJ. In accordance with the contractual agreements, the project was implemented on schedule by 19.12.2025.

The consideration of a large number of nature conservation regulations in conjunction with the guarantee of local traffic for businesses in the Zwätzen Nord industrial estate and in the area of the former large bakery presented all parties involved with major challenges.

As expected, the work proved to be complicated due to deviations in the position and height of the existing supply lines from the existing documents.

Nevertheless, the site manager of Naumburger Bauunion, Mr. Mario Schellenberg, and his team managed to complete the project on time and to a high standard, thus improving traffic conditions for all road users

With the opening of the road, a central traffic junction in the north of the city will be permanently made more efficient and safer. At the same time, the extensive traffic restrictions in the districts of Jena-Nord, Löbstedt, Zwätzen and Kunitz will come to an end. The new traffic circle improves traffic flow, increases road safety for all road users and provides lasting relief for residents and visitors to the city.

Kommunalservice Jena would like to thank all the contractors, planners and companies involved for their reliable cooperation and the citizens for their patience during the construction period. With the completion of this project, another important contribution has been made to a stable traffic infrastructure in the north of Jena.
