Together with its project partners, Kommunalservice Jena is preparing the ground-breaking extension of Naumburger Straße. Part of the project is the extension of the streetcar line from the Zwätzen stop to the Himmelreich residential area. In preparation for the construction work, necessary tree felling is required in order to implement the planned measures.

Since Thursday, 16 trees have been felled in the area of the Jena-Zwätzen streetcar turning loop. This area is required as a storage and construction site area during the construction period. In addition, a further 79 trees will be removed along Naumburger Straße between February 2 and 6. The reason for this is the planned widening of the B88 federal highway. All tree felling will be carried out on the basis of the permits issued and is part of the approved construction project.

Replacement planting is planned for all felled trees. Kommunalservice Jena has already transplanted several large trees from the northern section of Naumburger Straße to Wiesenstraße in 2021. These trees have grown in their new location and have developed stably.

Public information event

The city of Jena will present the construction project to the public together with the partners involved on February 4, 2026 at 6 p.m. in the Rautalschule, Schreckenbachweg 3. During the meeting of the Zwätzen district council, the project participants will provide information about the planned construction process, the duration of the measures, expected restrictions - in particular detour and accessibility during the construction period - and the companies involved.

Scope of the construction project

The city of Jena, Kommunalservice Jena, Jenaer Nahverkehr, Stadtwerke Jena and Jenawasser are involved in the extension of Naumburger Straße. In addition to the extension of the streetcar line, the carriageway, footpaths and cycle paths as well as central supply and disposal lines are being completely renewed. The project involves considerable costs and will take around three years to complete.

Information for residents

During the construction period, there will inevitably be restrictions on road traffic and for residents. Kommunalservice Jena is aware of the associated inconvenience. The aim is to keep the disruption to a minimum and to carry out the construction work in a coordinated and speedy manner. Information on the progress of construction work and upcoming measures will be provided at an early stage and on an ongoing basis. The aim of the project is to sustainably improve mobility and infrastructure in the north of Jena. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2026, weather permitting.
