Jena crematorium awarded again: "Controlled crematorium" seal of approval extended for the third time

The Jena Crematorium has once again successfully passed a comprehensive audit and may bear the " Controlled Crematorium" seal of approval for a further three years. This confirms the high quality of the work at the Nordfriedhof site once again.

The new Jena crematorium has held this award continuously since 2017. The seal is not awarded permanently, but must be reconfirmed regularly. Every three years, an independent testing institute checks whether the strict criteria continue to be met. Among other things, the work processes, occupational health and safety, technical requirements in the area of environmental and emission protection as well as maintenance logs and measured values are assessed. The dignified and respectful treatment of the deceased is also an important part of the audit.

The renewed extension shows: Jena Crematorium works reliably, transparently and to high professional standards.

Ten years of a new location: a modern crematorium for the 21st century

The new crematorium at the North Cemetery in Jena was opened in May 2016. Since then, a place has been created there that is far more than a purely functional building. The modern architecture, generous window areas and targeted lighting accents create a dignified atmosphere. The view to the east over the Saale valley also lends the building a special tranquillity.

The crematorium meets the high technical and environmental requirements of our time. It combines modern technology with a sensitive approach to a subject that is often associated with pain, uncertainty and many questions for relatives.

Accompanying cremations: Consciously accompanying the last journey

Accompanying cre mations have also been possible at Jena Crematorium for ten years now. This allows relatives to consciously accompany the last journey of a deceased person. For many, this is an important moment of farewell.

After all, cremation is not just a technical process. For many people, it is the actual burial: the coffin is handed over to the fire, just as it is handed over to the earth during a burial. It is the last path on which accompaniment is still possible.

The service is becoming increasingly popular. In 2025, around 2,000 cremations took place at Jena Crematorium, 75 of which were accompanied cremations. The feedback from relatives is very positive. At the same time, it is clear that many people still do not know that this form of farewell is possible in Jena. More information is needed here - also from funeral directors. It is often regretted when relatives only find out afterwards that they would have had this option.

Personal arrangements are also conceivable. For example, a coffin painting can be a very individual and comforting part of the farewell. Such wishes require some planning and time, but can generally be made possible.

A regional farewell instead of long distances

Another important topic is funeral tourism. Many deceased people are transported over long distances before they are cremated. It is often not at all clear to relatives where exactly the cremation takes place.

It is worth asking consciously: Where will the deceased be cremated? A long journey does not always correspond to the wishes or wishes of the deceased person and their family. Jena Crematorium offers a modern, tested and dignified option directly on site.

The conclusion is clear: anyone who wants a regional, transparent and personal farewell should consciously consider Jena Crematorium.

Guided tours and insights possible

In order to reduce uncertainty and answer questions openly, guided tours of Jena Crematorium are possible at any time by prior appointment. Interested parties can find out more and make an appointment via the website.

Outlook: Crime novel reading and anniversary in 2028
