Rehabilitation of the Fürstengraben ceiling

Kommunalservice Jena intends to renovate a section of the Fürstengraben. The construction site begins west of the streetcar track area at the Löbdergraben / Saalbahnhofstraße / Lutherplatz junction and ends around 65 meters west of the Bibliotheksplatz / Weigelstraße junction. The section on Fürstengraben is approx. 315 meters long. In addition, the side arms Bibliotheksplatz, Weigelstraße and Schlossgasse each have a length of approx. 25 meters. The total area is approx. 3,900 m². The entire construction site is shown in the site plan (see attachment).

This is a road maintenance project. The renovation is necessary due to the poor condition of the existing asphalt surface course. In recent years, there has been an increase in cracking, leaching and grain breakouts, some of which have already led to potholes.

As part of the measure, the worn asphalt surface course is to be renewed over its entire surface to a thickness of 4 cm. In some areas, damage has been detected in deeper layers, which is why the deeper binder and/or base courses are also to be renewed in some areas.

To the west of the Weigelstraße junction, the kerb alignment will be changed on the south side. To this end, the kerb system will be renewed over a distance of around 50 meters.

The measure will be carried out by the company STREICHER Tief- und Ingenieurbau from Jena in the period from 09.03. - 10.04.2026.

The construction period, necessary closures and the traffic routing during the construction period were coordinated with the responsible traffic authority. In particular, parallel measures with traffic impacts were also taken into account.

Due to the high traffic importance of the affected road section, there will be no full closure.

During the construction period, Fürstengraben will be a one-way street in the outward direction and will remain open to traffic.

Construction work will be carried out while maintaining the westbound direction of traffic (towards Straße des 17. Juni or Weimar) and will be implemented in two construction phases with half-side closures.

Traffic heading into the city from Weimar will be diverted via Erfurter Straße - Katharinenstraße - Lutherstraße - Ernst-Haeckel-Platz - Knebelstraße.

The junctions with Weigelstraße, Schlossgasse, Bibliotheksplatz and Zwätzengasse will be closed during the entire construction period.

Weigelstraße and Schlossgasse can be reached via Leutragraben, Teichgraben, Nollenplan, Kollegiengasse, Eichplatz, Rathausgasse, Jenergasse and Hinter der Kirche. For this purpose, the one-way street regulation in the street Hinter der Kirche will be temporarily lifted.

Access to Bibliotheksplatz, Zwätzengasse and Ballhausgasse is possible via Saalbahnhofstraße, Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße and Nollendorfer Straße.

The Hotel Schwarzer Bär can be reached via Zwätzengasse and Ballhausgasse. The one-way traffic regulation in Ballhausgasse will be temporarily suspended for this purpose.

For safety reasons, pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to cross the construction site during the construction work. Crossing options are available at both ends of the construction section. To the east, crossings will be made via the light-signalized crossings at the Löbdergraben / Saalbahnhofstraße / Lutherplatz junction; to the west, a temporary traffic light system will be set up that switches green on request. A crossing at Schlossgasse / Zwätzengasse is not planned. The detour will be signposted accordingly.

Kommunalservice Jena asks all road users and residents for their understanding for the restrictions associated with the measure and recommends that they observe the detour and the additional information on site.
