How long until the next green phase? The traffic lights at the Teichgraben / Schillerstraße and Leutragraben intersection now show pedestrians this. A so-called "remaining red" display counts down the time until the red phase ends. The previous "signal coming" display has been replaced by a countdown.
The implementation by the KSJ was technically challenging. The city of Jena's modern traffic lights react flexibly to the traffic situation - phases are extended or shortened as required. A fixed countdown is not compatible with this. This is why most of the installations in Jena are not suitable for such a display.
Locations with a particularly large number of pedestrians are particularly suitable. Due to the high pedestrian frequency, the Teichgraben / Schillerstrasse or Leutragraben intersection was chosen. The aim of the countdown is to increase the patience of people waiting to cross the road and thus reduce the number of people jaywalking.
Technical challenges
The idea for the display is already over two years old. Before it could be implemented, however, adjustments had to be made to the traffic light control computer. This work could only be carried out in conjunction with the track renewal at Ernst-Abbe-Platz, as changes for local traffic were necessary there at the same time. The countdown could only go into operation once all the measures had been completed.
