The campaign is organized by the Bürgerstiftung Jena Saale-Holzland in cooperation with the city of Jena, the Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ ) and numerous other local partners.

Several hundred volunteers work together at various locations along the Saale to remove waste from the river and its banks. The Saale clean-up is thus a visible contribution to environmental protection and nature conservation right on our own doorstep and shows anew every year how committed the citizens of Jena are to their city.

Support from Kommunalservice Jena

Kommunalservice J ena provides the necessary collection logistics for the campaign. For example, 100 collection tongs will be made available to the community foundation for the campaign day. In addition, the KSJ will set up containers at various points along the Saale where the collected waste can be collected. At the end of the collection campaign, the KSJ will dispose of the waste properly.

Typical finds during Saale cleaning

Experience has shown that very different types of waste are collected along the river. This includes, among other things:

  • Beverage cans and glass bottles
  • Plastic packaging and disposable cups
  • Cigarette butts
  • Plastic bags and film
  • old items of clothing or shoes
  • Metal parts or small electrical appliances

Occasionally, larger objects such as bicycles, shopping carts or car tires are also recovered from the shore area.

Taking responsibility together

The Saaleputz has become a firm tradition in Jena over the past few years. Associations, initiatives, families, school classes and committed citizens regularly take part in the campaign. In addition to practical environmental protection, the main focus is on joint commitment to a clean and liveable city.
