Waste electrical/electronic equipment
The KSJ operates collection points at recycling centers to take back old appliances. In accordance with the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act, disused electrical and electronic equipment must be handed in at the collection points set up (recycling centers or similar).
Electrical and electronic waste does not belong in the waste garbage cans at your home!
Electrical appliances are sorted, partially dismantled and prepared for recycling directly at the KSJ.
A distinction is made between
- Large household appliances
z. E.g. washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, ovens, microwaves, electric heaters - Refrigerators
z. E.g. refrigerators, freezers - Small household appliances
z. E.g. vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, toasters, irons, electric clocks and scales, shavers - Lighting fixtures
z. E.g. lights for fluorescent and energy-saving lamps (but: light bulbs belong in the residual waste!) - Consumer electronic devices
z. E.g. radios, televisions, video cameras, electric musical instruments - Information and telecommunication devices
z. E.g. computers, printers, calculators, telephones, photocopiers - Toys and sports and leisure equipment
z. E.g. electric trains and racetracks, video game consoles, bicycle, running and gambling machines, diving and rowing computers - Electrical and electronic tools
z. E.g. drills, cordless screwdrivers, lawnmowers, welding and soldering equipment, sewing machines - Monitoring and control instruments
z. E.g. smoke detectors, heating regulators, thermostats - Automatic output devices
z. E.g. cash dispensers, drinks dispensers

Disposal options
The KSJ offers private households the following disposal options free of charge:
- Drop off at the KSJ collection points
Löbstedter Straße 56 and Emil-Wölk-Straße 13a recycling centers (here only for households)
- Drop off in depot containers for Small scrap metal / small electrical devices
The gray containers for the disposal of Small scrap metal / small electrical devices are also located at the locations for the collection of glass and old textiles.
The container opening is approx. 90 x 50 cm. It is not permitted to deposit appliances next to the containers. This is a source of danger and an offense.
- Mobile pollutant collection (pollutant mobile)
Only small electronic waste can be handed in at the mobile hazardous waste collection point.
- Collection of large household appliances
(refrigerators and freezers, TVs, monitors, washing machines, tumble dryers, electric stoves and dishwashers)
The intended disposal must be notified in advance to the KSJ service office (Tel. 03641 4989-260) or the KSJ (Tel. 03641 4989-500) in order to arrange a collection date. The appliances to be collected must be placed at the boundary of the property on the agreed day by 6:00 a.m. and labeled with the owner's name.
Please do not simply put large appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers or freezers out for collection. These appliances must be registered with us separately in advance.

What do you need to consider?
- Please remove all harmful substances such as batteries/rechargeable batteries and toner cartridges (dispose of batteries/rechargeable batteries, toner cartridges at a recycling center) before handing in the electrical appliances - if this can be done without destroying them.
- To avoid short circuits, please tape the terminals beforehand and contact the recycling center staff if the batteries are defective. Short circuits in lithium-ion batteries can lead to fires.
- Vacuum cleaner bags, on the other hand, can be disposed of in the black garbage can (residual waste).
- Motorized appliances and deep fryers must be disposed of without operating materials or oil content.
Repair instead of disposal!
Before supposedly disused/defective devices end up in the waste bin all too quickly, there is the option of having them repaired by an appliance service, service provider, specialist retailer or at a repair café.
The KSJ has been supporting the work of the Repair Café since 2015. Stickers on the gray depot containers in Jena refer to the repair service.
