Paper, cardboard, and paperboard are collected in blue plastic bins through the curbside collection system. The following bins are permitted:
The 120- and 240-liter bins are provided free of charge and can be picked up by you at Kommunalservice Jena, located at Löbstedter Straße 56. The blue bins are equipped with a transponder chip and an identification number (white sticker) from KSJ and are therefore registered to a specific property.
For housing associations and private landlords, 1,100-liter wheeled containers ( blue) are available. You can obtain these through our sales department: vertrieb-ksj@jena.de.
The bins are emptied according to fixed collection schedules. You can view the dates under “Waste Collection Dates.”
As shown in the picture, loose cardboard boxes are increasingly piling up next to the recycling bins on the streets of Jena. Unfortunately, these are often left next to a recycling bin that’s already half full. Considering that hundreds of paper recycling bins must be emptied every day as part of a paper recycling collection route, one can imagine the extent of the additional effort this requires.
Disposing of items left next to the bins not only takes a lot of time but also places an additional physical strain on the waste collection staff at Kommunalservice Jena. For this reason, cardboard boxes left next to the bins have not been collected for quite some time. Another problem is that these items get soaked in wet weather, which makes it impossible to properly recycle this valuable raw material.
Please crush the cardboard boxes and dispose of them in your blue bin.
Is your blue bin already full, but the pickup date isn’t coming up yet? Then take your excess cardboard and other items directly to one of our recycling centers. We have compactor bins on site where you can dispose of your cardboard and other items free of charge.
You can also order an additional paper recycling bin.

The blue bins are emptied by Kommunalservice Jena and transferred at Löbstedter Straße 68.
After being collected, this waste is allocated to the dual systems based on market share. The dual systems are a take-back system for the collection, sorting, and recycling of paper. “Der Grüne Punkt – Duales System Deutschland GmbH (DSD)” was the first and is probably the best-known dual system. Today, “Der Grüne Punkt GmbH” is one of many providers of take-back systems.
Each dual system is responsible for meeting the legally mandated recycling quotas. The mixed waste collected in Jena is transported by freight forwarders to the individual sorting and recycling facilities.
