Since July 2022, the Recycling Center North has been collecting corks from wine bottles to support the protection of cranes. Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) is registered as a secondary collection point with NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) Hamburg. Recycling the corks helps to preserve cork oak forests and produce ecological insulation material - a proven and simple contribution to the environment and species conservation.

At the beginning of December 2025, the employees of the Recycling Center North handed over the current collection to the Naturschutzjugend Jena (NAJU). Marco Hüttig (left) can be seen in the handover photo. Since the start of the campaign, a total of 750 kilograms of cork material has been collected - more than 30,000 bottle caps. The NAJU uses the proceeds for environmental education projects and creative activities that give young people direct access to nature conservation and resource protection.

The collection volumes show a clear trend, growing year on year and firmly rooted in the commitment of citizens:

  • 2022: 150 kg
  • 2023: 140 kg
  • 2024: 200 kg
  • 2025: 250 kg - a new record

The collection continues without interruption. Corks can be placed in the brown collection garbage can as usual during the opening hours of the Recycling Center North. The KSJ would like to express its sincere thanks to all supporters.
