The start of the planned road surface renovation on Fürstengraben has been postponed by one week. The new start date is March 16, 2026. The reason for the delay is supply bottlenecks for urgently needed spare parts as part of inspection work on the asphalt mixing plant.
Despite the later start of construction, the contracted construction company is still aiming to complete the work by April 10, 2026 as planned. The prerequisite for this is that no unforeseen events occur in the further course of construction.
Scope of the construction work
As part of the project, the Fürstengraben will be renovated over a length of around 315 meters. The construction area begins west of the streetcar track area at the Löbdergraben / Saalbahnhofstraße / Lutherplatz junction and ends around 65 meters after the Bibliotheksplatz / Weigelstraße junction. The junctions with Bibliotheksplatz, Weigelstraße and Schlossgasse will also be included in the construction work. In total, the renovation covers an area of around 3,900 square meters.
Why the renovation is necessary
The measure is necessary because the asphalt surface is showing increasing damage due to its age. The top four centimetres of the asphalt layer will therefore be renewed. In areas with deeper damage, the underlying layers will also be replaced.
In addition, to the west of the Weigelstraße junction on the south side, the kerb will be adjusted and renewed over a length of around 50 meters.
The construction work is being carried out by STREICHER Tief- und Ingenieurbau from Jena.
Traffic routing during the construction period
Despite the construction work, the Fürstengraben will generally remain open to traffic. In order to keep the restrictions as low as possible, there will be no full road closure.
During the construction period, traffic out of the city in the direction of Straße des 17. Juni / Weimar will be routed as a one-way street and will remain possible. Traffic heading into the city from Weimar will be diverted via Erfurter Straße, Katharinenstraße, Lutherstraße, Ernst-Haeckel-Platz and Knebelstraße.
The work will be carried out in two construction phases with half-sided road closures.
Accessibility of adjacent roads
During the construction period, the junctions with Weigelstraße, Schlossgasse, Bibliotheksplatz and Zwätzengasse will not be directly accessible from Fürstengraben.
Weigelstraße and Schlossgasse can be reached via Leutragraben, Teichgraben, Nollenplan, Kollegiengasse, Eichplatz, Rathausgasse, Jenergasse and Hinter der Kirche. To this end, the one-way system in Hinter der Kirche will be temporarily suspended.
Bibliotheksplatz, Zwätzengasse and Ballhausgasse can be reached via Saalbahnhofstraße, Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße and Nollendorfer Straße.
The Hotel Schwarzer Bär can still be reached via Zwätzengasse and Ballhausgasse. The one-way street regulations will also be temporarily adjusted there.
Information for pedestrians and cyclists
For safety reasons, the construction site cannot be crossed directly on foot or by bicycle during the works. However, crossings are possible at both ends of the construction section: to the east via the traffic lights at the Löbdergraben / Saalbahnhofstraße / Lutherplatz junction and to the west via a temporary traffic light that switches green on request.
Crossing in the Schlossgasse / Zwätzengasse area is not possible. Detour will be signposted accordingly.
We ask for your understanding
Kommunalservice Jena asks all road users and residents for their understanding for the restrictions associated with the construction work. The aim of the renovation is to restore the Fürstengraben to a good and safe condition.
