With an impressive reuse rate of 82%, Tauschhaus 2.0 in Jena sets a strong example for sustainability and resource conservation. In 2024, around 57 tons of various goods found a new user, which not only saved valuable raw materials but also saved around €6,000 in disposal costs. Particularly noteworthy: 55% of the items passed on were books.
"The swap house is a success story for the circular economy in Jena," explains Uwe Feige (Plant Manager KSJ) "It shows how community action contributes to sustainable development."
From book swap to platform - reuse
What began in 2017 as a small book swap at the northern recycling center has developed into a versatile platform for reuse with the Tauschhaus 2.0. In addition to books, household goods, children's toys and much more can now also be passed on. The concept is simple: give, take, reuse - at no cost at all.
Tauschhaus 2.0 is a joint project of Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) and Saale Betreuungswerk der Lebenshilfe Jena gGmbH and has become an important part of the city of Jena. With almost 23,000 visitors in 2024, it is clear that interest in sustainable alternatives to throwing things away is constantly growing. With the aim of putting used items to new use, it makes a significant contribution to reducing waste and CO₂ emissions.
